What I most like about photography is the moment that you can't anticipate: you have to be constantly watching for it, ready to welcome the unexpected.
Martine FranckThere is a unique atmosphere in London at night. I like to keep a low profile and in such a big city this is easy, even late at night. What's not easy is to isolate a piece of reality in a mass of people, but the thrill of capturing a fascinating situation is hard to beat. The man has just stepped out to smoke, and the street seems very quiet, if only for a few seconds. Chaos seems to be behind the glass - it's quiet here. The stairs seem to be entering another, not necessarily better, dimension.
This work is part of a larger series of photographs entitled 'Stills from Non-existent Movies'. I have been working on this series for several years and I'm constantly adding new images. I am driven by a desire to capture the moments in which ordinary situations take on a cinematic, narrative quality. The photographs are mainly taken at night using natural light sources.
If I had to point to one thing that catches my eye, it's the "pose" of this random model. A second later or earlier the photo wouldn't have excited me in the same way.
