I never think of [a photograph] beforehand. When I get there, something happens and in a split second the pictures emerges.
William EgglestoneThe photograph was taken early in the morning at the cruise ship. When the crew saw me taking a photo through the window, they tried to chase me away, but luckily the cruise guide appreciated my curiosity and let me on board before everyone else. Thanks to his kindness, I was able to quietly photograph how the gentle morning light was coming through the windows to give this old-fashioned interior some elegance and charm.
There are some photographs where editing plays a key role. Of course, the photograph wouldn't work if it wasn't thought through at the time of taking, and you couldn't add that gentle light, but it was only in the editing process that I brought out the overall atmosphere of the scene as I wanted to see it. Inspired by the work of the pioneers of colour photography: Saul Leiter and William Egglestone, this photograph affects me in a way I can't quite describe. I feel nostalgic for a place and time that I didn't live in. I have always wanted to take such a sublime photograph and I am very proud of it. I don't know when the next opportunity like this will come along. Sometimes you have to be lucky to meet the right person at the right time to let you in to the place you want to see.
