"Oggi è una
giornata di neve"

For me, camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity

Henri Cartier-Bresson
"Oggi è una giornata di neve" means "Today is a snowy day".

A friend of mine said that she liked most of all the black and white abstract photos I took during a ski trip to Aosta, Italy. Especially the ones from which you can't immediately read what they depict.

I have to admit that these are also some of my favorite photographs. I didn't plan to take black and white photos during this trip. However, after a day of skiing with my camera in my backpack and snapping a dozen or so photos that I was more or less satisfied with, when I saw this scene unfolding before me I felt that the play of light and shadows on those snowy slopes could be best captured in black and white.

I often say to myself "take care of the consistency of your photos", or "you have a specific aesthetic in mind for this series then stick to it". And yes some photos work well in a series, but some stand alone without the context.

Sometimes it's worth throwing off the constraints of your assumptions, letting your intiuition run the show and just taking the shot to capture a moment that will never look the same again. Be spontaneous. I'm a bit corny today, forgive me.

What works for me here

I like the fact that everything just plays out. I mean that the composition, the light, the shadow, the texture of the snow, compliment each other. The shallow depth of field adds a softness, creating a rather painterly look - my eyes enjoy this effect.

The photograph expresses the idea that something inhospitable and harsh can be reassuring and gentle at the same time.
