"Ocean's Gate"
by Demetriusz Wenglarczyk

From the "Scenes of Ireland" photography series.

The camera therefore is an eye capable of looking forward and backward at the same time. Forward, it does in fact “shoot a picture,” backward, it records a vague shadow, sort of a x-ray of the photographer’s mind, by looking straight through his (or her) eye, to his(or her) bottom of soul.

Here, between the rocks, the waves slowed long enough to return gently to the ocean. It reminded me breathing deeply with eyes closed. When we inhale, we can go inside of us for a while, and when we exhale, we can return safely to the surface. The photo captures that moment of return when, having found peace, we are filled with a sense of reconciliation with the world.

Sometimes you have to work hard to find the right frame, and sometimes nature suggests it. Some effort is needed to prevent this 'easy' frame from becoming a banal one. In this case, the effort was to fight against the wind, the overcast Irish weather, drops of water and a tripod sinking in the sand.

What works for me here

This would probably be one of the photos in my archive that I could point to as the perfect composition. Everything is in its place. The overcast sky, combined with the longer exposure, gave me the soft light I was looking for, transforming a windy and rather gloomy setting into a tranquil landscape.
