Iconic, majestic and solitary. You probably know Mount Cervino in Europe as the Matterhorn, or even as 'that mountain on a Toblerone chocolate box'. It's been photographed thousands of times from the Swiss side but I think there aren't that many memorable images taken from the Italian side.
I was lucky enough to be skiing in the gorgeous Alpine resort nestled in the foothills of this peak. It was already afternoon and we were heading back down to the car park, after hot chocolate and non-alcoholic beer we'd drunk in the après-ski bar. I stopped after a few more runs and pulled out my camera to try to get some good frames. I got lucky with the weather, with low clouds catching the top of the mountain and shadows dancing on the slopes at its base.
What works for me here
Normally, I try to leave some free space in my photographs, but here there is hardly any. This photograph is full of everything, like a boiling soup. But in this choas I can almost feel the calm majesty of nature moving in slow motion. There's something a bit mouldable about this scene, like a sculpture just taking shape in front of us.
