[Photography is] very related to poetry. It’s suggestive and fragmentary and unsatisfying in a lot of ways. It’s as much about what you leave out as what you put in.
Alec SothIn a crowded seaside town, a stallholder covered the mascots with plastic foil to protect them from the rain. At the sight of this scene, a sad reflection passed through me, that carefree and joy are today turning into anxiety and a sense of powerlessness, as if we are the ones being wrapped in ever-tightening foils so that we live in bubbles from which it is difficult to get out.
This is one of my favourite photographs. There are moments when you're already thinking ‘nothing is going to happen today’, then it starts to rain and the world becomes more interesting. This goose mascot stand was positioned perfectly in the middle of a street souvenir shop. Just the positioning of those goose necks and the expression of the eyes was a strong incentive for me to take a photo.
